AiF: Producing Lab

Securing the Rights: A Producer’s Guide

Whether you’re producing a small independent picture or gigantic Hollywood blockbuster each motion picture begins with securing ownership to an underlying literary work or “property”. This property can take many forms, a novel, a play or an original screenplay.

The first in a series of producing labs to be hosted and facilitated by Australians in Film (AiF) and the Australian Government’s Brand Australia program, will focus on the various issues surrounding securing ownership to an underlying literary property, and why this is critical for a producer.

The lab will also briefly touch upon:
(i) the option-purchase agreement which must be negotiated by a producer to option the motion picture rights to a property.
(ii) how a producer can address chain-of-title (or rights) issues.
(iii) Q&A discussion.

The program responds to the needs and opportunity to more effectively communicate the skills and contributions of contemporary Australia to a global audience.
The broad objective of the Building Brand Australia Program, expressed through the brand ‘Australia Unlimited’ is to enrich Australia’s global reputation by achieving enhanced awareness of contemporary Australian credentials in business, science, education, technology, creativity and not-for-profit activity.
